Local Law No. 2 of the Year 2022

A Local Law Changing the Term of Office of Town Supervisor

from Two to Four Years, For the Term Commencing January 1, 2024

Be it enacted by the Town Board of the Town of Coeymans as follows:

Chapter 50 of the Code of the Town of Coeymans is amended by adding a new Article III entitled Town Supervisor, which shall state as follows:

§ 50-11 Statutory authority.

This article is adopted pursuant to the Section 10(1)(ii)(a) and Section 23(2)(e) of the Municipal Home Rule Law of the State of New York.

§ 50-12 Increase in term of office.

The term of office of the elected Town Supervisor shall be four years. Such four-year term shall commence as of the first day of January 2024, and shall apply to the person elected to such office at the town election to be held on November 7, 2023 and those elected thereafter, provided that a proposition submitted pursuant to § 50-13 below is approved.

§ 50-13 Mandatory referendum.

A.  This article is adopted subject to a mandatory referendum and shall be submitted for approval of the qualified voters of the Town of Coeymans at the Town Election to be held on November 8, 2022.

B.  A proposition in the following form shall be included on the ballot at such town election, and the four year term of office shall not take effect unless such proposition is approved by a majority vote of the qualified voters voting thereon:

“Shall Town of Coeymans Local Law No. 2, 2022 entitled ‘A Local Law Changing the Term of Office of Town Supervisor from Two to Four Years, For the Term Commencing January 1, 2024,’ be approved?”

§ 50-14 Supersession.

This article shall supersede Town Law § 24, relating to the term of office for Town Supervisor of the Town of Coeymans.

§ 50-15 When effective.

This article shall become effective immediately, upon being filed in the office of Secretary of State, after approval by the qualified voters.
